GPT-6: What It Is, What’s New and How to Use It Free in ChatGPT

Home » AI » GPT-6: What It Is, What’s New and How to Use It Free in ChatGPT

GPT-6 is OpenAI’s new generation of models and, since October 7, 2026, the main model in ChatGPT. Its most visible change is Intelligent UI: answers are no longer just text. They can include charts, buttons, forms and small tools you use right inside the chat. And yes, you can use it for free. Here is what GPT-6 is, which model you get on your plan, what GPT-6.1 Terra is and how to get the most out of it.

Quick answer: GPT-6 reached ChatGPT on October 7, 2026 for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise (with GPT-6 Sol), and on October 8 for Free and Go (with GPT-6 Luna). To use it for free, all you need is a ChatGPT account. The most powerful version, GPT-6 Astra, is reserved for Pro, Business and Enterprise.

What is GPT-6?

GPT-6 is not a single model but a family. OpenAI has introduced it in stages, and each model has a different job:

  • GPT-6 Astra: the most powerful. In ChatGPT it powers the “Pro” reasoning option (GPT-6 Pro) for hard, long tasks.
  • GPT-6 Sol: the model for paid plans in the chat. Built for complex work such as coding, analysis and research.
  • GPT-6 Luna: the fastest and cheapest. It is what the Free and Go plans use.
  • GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6.1 Terra: later versions that, for now, are only in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API, not in the regular chat.

Sol and Luna debuted on September 22, 2026 in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API. OpenAI said at the time that both bring Astra’s advances to faster, more affordable models, and that it was cutting API prices by 50% compared with GPT-5.6. Two weeks later, GPT-6 reached the chat that almost everyone uses.

What’s new in GPT-6 for ChatGPT

Intelligent UI: answers with charts and buttons

This is the most visible change. OpenAI trained GPT-6 to compose each answer from text, visuals and interactive elements, and to pick the format that fits your question. A comparison might show up as columns. An explanation might become a diagram where you tap each part. And if plain text is the most useful thing, you get plain text.

You can also ask for tools: a calculator, a bill splitter for a dinner, or a small game, all working inside the conversation. No special prompt is needed, and there is no separate usage limit.

Intelligent UI can show charts and controls that you change yourself.

Answers that start sooner

GPT-6 can begin answering while it is still thinking, and the interface appears piece by piece. OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts responding 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant on questions that need a web search. Note that this measures when the answer starts, not when it finishes.

A control for how much it thinks

In the model menu, GPT-6 replaces the old “Latest” option and adds a reasoning slider: Instant (fast), Medium, High, Extra High and Pro. The higher the level, the longer it takes and the better it handles hard problems. Which levels you see depends on your plan, as the table above shows.

How to use GPT-6 for free, step by step

  1. Go to ChatGPT on the web or in the app and create a free account (or log in).
  2. Update the mobile app to the latest version. Older desktop apps for Windows and macOS do not show Intelligent UI, so use the web version instead.
  3. Type your question. On the free plan, GPT-6 runs on the Luna model.
  4. For harder questions, turn on “Think,” which reasons for longer before it answers.
  5. Ask for visual things to try the interface, such as “compare these two phones in a table” or “build me a mortgage payment calculator.”

One caveat: OpenAI’s own help pages are not fully consistent. Its Intelligent UI page says Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna, while another models page still lists GPT-5.6 Luna as the default model on those plans. In practice, the free plan uses Luna with the new interface. What it does not get is Sol or Astra. To get more out of it, read our guide on how to use ChatGPT step by step and these best ChatGPT prompts.

GPT-6 on mobile vs. on the web

On a phone, the quickest route is the ChatGPT app, as long as it is up to date. Charts and sliders are easy to use with a finger, which makes mobile a good place to try Intelligent UI. On the web, you get the full model menu, the reasoning controls and the settings for turning the new interface down. If you use an older Windows or macOS desktop app, switch to the web version, because those apps do not show Intelligent UI.

Prompts to try

  • “Compare a 15-year and a 30-year mortgage in a table, then give me a calculator where I can change the rate.”
  • “Explain how compound interest works with an interactive chart.”
  • “Make a simple tool to split a $240 dinner bill among five people, with a tip option.”
  • “Summarize this article in five bullet points, text only.”

How to turn off Intelligent UI

If you prefer text-only answers, open Settings in ChatGPT on the web, go to Personalization, then Layout and Visuals, and choose “Simple.” This reduces charts and buttons, although OpenAI warns that some may still appear. It is not a text-only mode.

You can also add it to your custom instructions, for example: “keep answers short” or “use tables for comparisons.”

Where it does not work

  • At the Pro reasoning level (GPT-6 Astra).
  • In voice mode.
  • In the Work tab of ChatGPT.
  • In older Windows and macOS desktop apps.

GPT-6 on paid plans

Plus uses GPT-6 Sol in chat with the Instant, Medium and High levels. It does not include Extra High or Pro in chat, but it does include GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex.

Pro (OpenAI offers two tiers, $100 and $200) adds Extra High and GPT-6 Pro, powered by Astra, in chat as well as in Work and Codex. Business and Enterprise get the same, although the admin decides which models each member can use.

For companies, the key is Work and Codex, where GPT-6.1 Sol and Terra are used. If that is your world, see how to apply AI automation or AI for marketing in your day-to-day work.

What is GPT-6.1 Terra?

GPT-6.1 Terra is a mid-size model between Luna and Sol that OpenAI launched in late October 2026. It is built to use the computer for you: it understands what is on screen, takes actions across apps and writes naturally, at a lower price than the big models.

Important: Terra is not in the chat. You can only pick it in ChatGPT Work and Codex on paid plans, and in the API for developers.

Official vs. rumor

  • Official (OpenAI, October 2026): rollout dates, models by plan, Intelligent UI, where it does not work, GPT-6.1 Terra only in Work and Codex, and the figure of answers starting 44% sooner.
  • Unofficial: performance comparisons passed around by users, and isolated bug reports (for example, accounts where Intelligent UI does not turn on). OpenAI has not confirmed these.
  • Rumor (July 2026, no official announcement): a redesign of the ChatGPT desktop app without tabs before the end of the year.

Is it worth paying for GPT-6?

For everyday questions, the free plan with GPT-6 Luna and Intelligent UI is more than enough. Plus is worth it if you code, analyze long documents or often need deep reasoning, because Sol is clearly stronger on complex tasks. Pro only pays off if you run long tasks every day that call for Astra.
